Lifetime Achievement Award
Dr. James Barnes,
B.A. (Hons.)’66, B.Comm.(Hons.)’66
His calendar includes speaking engagements and consultations at boardroom tables worldwide. Even though he’s had a career many only dream of, Dr. Jim Barnes, at age 61 says, “In many ways I think I’m just hitting my prime.”
He graduated from Memorial in 1966, took his M.B.A. at Harvard and his Ph.D. at the University of Toronto before becoming director of Memorial’s School of Business in 1978. He was the first dean of the Faculty of Business Administration in 1983. Under his leadership the business building was expanded and the M.B.A. program created. He helped establish the Centre for Management Development and the PJ Gardiner Institute.
An international authority on customer strategy, Dr. Barnes has advised and served on the boards of directors of publicly traded companies. He’s a founding partner of the Newfoundland-based Bristol Group and served as its chairman.
Among Dr. Barnes seven publications is Fundamentals of Marketing, best-selling marketing textbook, now in its tenth edition. He also penned the internationally acclaimed Secrets of Customer Relationship Management: It’s All About How You Make Them Feel. He’s published 40 papers and presented more than 60 conference papers. And he’s on the editorial boards of several international journals.
Among his awards is the 1996 Alumni Honour Award from
Memorial’s Business faculty; the first national 1997 Leaders in
Management Education Award from the Financial Post; and his 1999
election as a fellow of the Professional Marketing Research Society
of Canada.
Dr. Barnes continues to teach undergraduate and M.B.A. courses at
Memorial and continues to write and work on what he says is
“really leading edge stuff. I can’t wait to get to work
every morning.”
Horizon Award
Dr. Thomas Yee, B.Mus.’95
Since graduating from Memorial in 1995 with the Memorial
University Medal for Academic Excellence in Music, Dr. Thomas Yee has
obtained a highly regarded faculty appointment in the Department of
Music at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. His eagerness to share
his gift of music makes Dr. Yee an inspiring teacher.
When he sits at the keyboard his brilliance as a performer is
dazzling. Dr. Yee has performed as a soloist and chamber musician
throughout Canada and the United States, in Taiwan, Japan, South
Korea, Cyprus and Turkey. He’s appeared as piano soloist in
concerts with the symphony orchestras of Honolulu, Augusta,
Newfoundland, Grand Junction, Boulder, University of Colorado, and
Littleton. Since 2002 he’s performed 36 solo and chamber
concerts in Honolulu.
This talented young performer has captured his share of national and
international titles including the Josef Hofmann International Piano
Competition, the Eastman School of Music Hamamatsu Competition, the
Canadian Music Competitions International Stepping Stone, and the
Canadian Federation of Music Teacher’s Associations National
Competition.
Upcoming engagements include performances with the University of
Hawaii Orchestra , University of Hawaii Concert Band and debut
performances in Nagoya, Japan, Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong and
Alaska.
Dr. Yee has two recording projects in progress and will release his
debut CD in late 2005.
J.D. Eaton Award
Mr. Calvin Butt,
B.A.(Ed.)’64, B.A.’67, Grad.Dip.Ed.’71,
M.Ed.’74
Calvin Butt has dedicated countless hours of volunteer service to the
primary, elementary and secondary levels of Newfoundland and Labrador
’s education system. He’s worked as a teacher and senior
administrator and has also instructed at Memorial University and
community colleges across the province. He is also a leading promoter
of preschool education.
Mr. Butt has served in executive positions on several associations,
committees and boards including the Port aux Basques Branch of the
provincial teachers’ association, the former Integrated
Education Council, the former Avalon West School Board, the
Provincial School Boards’ Association, and the former Avalon
Strategic Social Plan.
Mr. Butt has been particularly generous in the time that he has
donated to his alma mater, Memorial University . He was elected four
times by his fellow alumni to serve three-year terms on
Memorial’s governing body, the Board of Regents. He served as
vice-chair of the Board and chair of its pensions committee. He was
also elected three times Memorial's Alumni Association and served as
its VP. In 1998 he founded the Baccalieu Trail Chapter of the alumni
association, served as its first president and took a lead role in
establishing the chapter’s scholarship fund.
Outstanding Community Service
Donald Crewe,
B.A.’69, B.Ed.’69, M.Ed.’82
A retired educator in Channel-Port aux Basques, Mr. Donald
Crewe’s tireless volunteer work spans more than 36 years.
Since 1969 he’s served in a wide range of leadership roles
including secretary of the Port aux Basques Minor Hockey Association;
vice-chair of the Dr. Charles L. LeGrow Health Centre Foundation;
local chair of the Rick Hansen Wheels in Motion fundraising event,
and local-area chair of the Cabot, Soiree and Viking Celebrations.
Mr. Crewe also serves as a member of the St. Paul ’s Anglican
Church Select Vestry, the Winter Carnival Committee, the Port aux
Basques 50th Anniversary Come Home Year Event, and the local chapter
of Toastmasters International. He has been a Royal Canadian Army
Cadet leader and trainer.
And just to top it all off, he performs with a popular local
folk-singing group that donates its revenues to local charities.
