Gary Peddle, B.Comm.(Hons.)(Co-op)'82, MBA ’85
President

After graduating from Memorial University, Gary earned his bachelor
of laws from the University of New Brunswick in 1988.
Prior to becoming
partner in the law firm Benson Myles, Barristers and Solicitors,
Gary worked with the Royal Commission on Hospital and Nursing Home
Costs, and as a financial consultant with A. Harvey and Company. He
has also lectured part-time with the Faculty of Business
Administration at Memorial.
Community
involvement is an integral component of Gary's life. He is past
chair of the Rotary Club of St. John's East Foundation Inc., past
director of the Victorian Order of Nurses, and past president of
the St. John's Oilfield Technical Society. He is former president
of the board of directors for Big Brothers and Sisters of Canada,
director and past president of Big Brothers and Big Sisters of St.
John's, Mount Pearl and district. Currently Gary is a director of
the St. John's Board of Trade and charter president of the Rotary
Club of St. John's East. He holds memberships with the Advisory
Board for the Salvation Army, the Law Society of Newfoundland, the
Canadian Bar Association, and is a member of the Memorial
University Alumni Association.
Gary and his wife,
Olive George, have two daughters, Jessica and Jillian.

Nath
Sheppard, BA’74, B.Ed.’74, M.Ed.’81

Committee
After 30 years as an educator, including department
head of social studies at three junior high schools in St. John's,
and president of the Social Studies Council for the Newfoundland
and Labrador Teacher's Association, Nath retired from the
classroom. But he carries with him a determination to use his
knowledge of the requirements and goals of the education system to
advance the benefits of the system for everyone involved.
From his home base
in St. John's, Nath chairs the St. John's chapter of Memorial
University 's Alumni Association. He serves as a consultant for the
Teacher's Institute, and is involved with curriculum development
and with private industry.
Consistently
reinforcing community improvement, Nath is a former provincial
chairman of the National Board of Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada,
and recipient of the prestigious Barnes Award from the Newfoundland
and Labrador Teachers' Association for his contribution to
professional development.

Tom
Bursey, B.Comm. ’83, MBA ’84
Vice-President
Tom Bursey is
Executive Director, Corporate Services at the Council of Canadian
Academies.
Tom received his Honours Bachelor of Commerce
(B.Comm. Hons.) and his Master Business Administration (MBA)
degrees from Memorial University . He is a member of the Society of
Management Accountants of Canada and holds the designation
Certified Management Accountant (CMA). He is a board member of the
Human Resources Professionals Association and he holds the
designation Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP). He
successfully completed the Advanced Program in Human Resources
Management at the School of Management ( University of Toronto )
and the Executive Program at the Ivey School of Business (
University of Western Ontario ).
Tom recently
received the designation Chartered Director (C. Dir.) from The
Directors College at McMaster University . He also received two
specialized governance certifications from The Directors College:
Audit Committee Certified (ACC) and Human Resources and
Compensation Committee Certified (HRCC). Tom is a member of the
Institute of Corporate Directors and is an Institute-Certified
Director (ICD.D).
Tom has over 20 years of experience in corporate services. Prior to
joining the Council of Canadian Academies, Tom held a number of
executive and senior management roles. He was the Managing Partner
of Bursey Consulting Group Inc., Vice President, Client Services
with Right Management Consultants,and Managing Director with Alan
Davis & Associates. Tom has held several senior management
positions with the ATCO Group (ATCO Frontec) and Bell Aliant
(NewTel Enterprises).

Heidi
Janes, B.Ed.’77, BA’77, M.Ed ‘88

Heidi is employed with the Marine Institute as Curriculum
Development Specialist, School of Maritime Studies/Degree Studies
& Research. She is an active member of the St. John’s
Chapter.

Secretary
Peggy Miller, B.Comm.’94
Currently employed as the manager of Marketing and Business
Development with Distance Education and Learning Technologies at
Memorial, Peggy has varied experiences in internationally promoting
technology products and services. With a career background in both
the private and public sector, she has also served on the board of
Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Technological Industries
and Crime Stoppers, and currently sits on the board of the
Newfoundland and Labrador Science Centre. In 2004, Peggy graduated
from Royal Roads University with her MBA in Executive Management
and is commencing her masters certificate in Project Management at
Memorial.

Andrea
(nee Quinlan) Avery, B.Comm. ’93, MSHA ’98, BA
’00
After Andrea completed her commerce degree at Memorial in 1993, she
went on to earn a M.Sc. in health/business administration from the
University of Colorado at Denver in 1998, before returning to
Memorial to complete her second undergraduate degree, a BA (major
in German).
She has extensive experience in operational, financial, and human
resources management. She is currently working with Fortis
Properties.
Andrea, along with her husband, Peter, and son, Sam, live in
Paradise, Newfoundland. They are currently expecting a new addition
to their family in December 2006.

Ann Marie
Hann, B.Comm. ’81, MBA ’83
Ann Marie is the Managing Director of the Propane Gas Association
of Canada, based in Calgary. Prior to that, she was Principal with
Ann Marie Hann and Associates Limited. From 2000 to 2005 she served
as CEO of the Newfoundland and Labrador Workplace, Health, Safety
and Compensation Commission. She was the provincial deputy minister
of Environment and Labour from 1998-2000.

Bill Day, BA (Ed.)’73,
M.Ed.’89
After graduating
from Memorial University, he followed a successful career as an
educator until he retired as principal from Balbo Elementary in
Shoal Harbour, NL.
Bill is a former president of the Clarenville branch of the
Newfoundland and Labrador Teacher's Association and a founding
member of Memorial's alumni chapter in Clarenville. As an educator
and concerned citizen, Bill has held positions on various school
board committees; he is a founding member of Clarenville's Kiwanis
Club; and has been a member of St. Mary's Anglican Church Vestry
for many years.
He is provincial
president of the Retired Teacher's Association of Newfoundland and
Labrador and a member of the Board of Trustees for the Newfoundland
and Labrador Teachers' Group Insurance.

Jim Mason, M.B.A.’91
Jim is employed with Freedom 55 Financial and presently serves as
director for the new MBA Alumni Chapter. Jim was one of the
founding members of the CBS chamber in 1994 and a member of the St.
John’s Board of Trade since 2003.

Lloyd White, BA (Ed.) ’66, BA
’72
Born and educated in Twillingate, NL, Lloyd taught at J. M. Olds
Collegiate in Twillingate for 31 years (high school Math, Physics,
and Drama ). He retired in 1995 and moved to Gander. Jim is
immediate past-president of the Kiwanis Club of Gander and also a
member of the Avion Players of Gander. He is married to Dr. Eileen
St. Croix.

Lori Roul,
BA ’90, B.Ed. ’90
After completing her Bachelor of Arts and Education degree at
Memorial in 1989, Lori went on to Mount St. Vincent University to
complete her master's degree in Literacy. She is currently working
on a master's in Post Secondary Studies at Memorial. Lori is
employed as an instructor with College of the North Atlantic in
Labrador City. She is the MUN Chapter Leader for Labrador City and
has coordinated many successful alumni events for the area.

Darlene
McCurdy, B.Sc.’81
Darlene has spent
the past 24 years of her career in the public service. She has
worked as an environmental specialist and regional environment
supervisor with the Department of Environment as well as the
manager of operations for the Government Service Centre. For the
past seven years, she has been the Manager of the Western Regional
Office of the Occupational Health and Safety Inspections Division
of the Department of Labour.
