Celebrate Irish Language & Culture!
(Memorial University, St. John's Campus: Inco Innovation Centre) - March 10, 2010

On March 10, join visiting scholar, Brid Falconer and well-known Irish folk-dancer, Shawn Silver, for a Paddy's Day primer of free events celebrating everything "Irish".

Festivities begin with an afternoon presentation facilitated by Falconer, a broadcaster, journalist, graduate of Trinity College (Dublin) and passionate promoter of the Irish (Gaelic) language.

Falconer will deliver/read Louis De Paor's article on Disappearing Language. The paper examines the impact of colonization on the Gaelic language and follows the history of translation from Irish to English. The presentation takes place 2- 4 p.m. in the Inco Innovation Centre theatre, IIC2001.

Activities then move to the evening, beginning at 7 p.m. with a mini conversational Gaelic class facilitated by Falconer. The class is a great opportunity for participants to pick up some Paddy's Day appropriate phrases.

The scene will then shift from "phrase work" to "foot work", as Silver and his dancers take to the floor for a demonstration of Irish dance.

Joining the functions in the evening will be Mark Dobbin whose father, Craig, created the Ireland-Canada University Foundation that is sponsoring Falconer's visit.

The evening concludes with refreshments.

Political Science Reunion
(Memorial University, St. John's, NL) - May 28 & 29, 2010

Calling all MUN Political Science grads!

Join your old classmates, as well as many who did their time in Poli Sci before and after your era, for a celebration happening from May 28-29, 2010.

It is 40 years since the first MUN degrees were awarded in Political Science. Isn't it time we got together for some informal reflection on what has changed, and what has not, in that time? Both in the life of the department, and in the lives of grads. Profs, old and new, as well as department secretaries will be there.

We have booked the date. A steering committee is working on a program for events. What we need now is to get the word out, and for people to indicate their interest in attending.

Just reply to poscreunion@mun.ca!
