Dr. Gary Kachanoski begins term as Memorial’s new president and vice-chancellor

Click for larger image

Dr. Gary Kachanoski (pronounced catch-an-AW-ski) moved into Memorial's Office of the President on June 30, but officially began his term as Memorial's new president on July 1, 2010.

His first official was laying a wreath on behalf of the university community at the July 1 Memorial Day commemorations at the National War Memorial in St. John's.

Memorial's new president was born in Manitoba and raised in Saskatchewan, and recently finished serving as vice-president (research), Bentley Research Chair (Soil, Water and Environment) and professor of soil physics at the University of Alberta in Edmonton.

Bob Simmonds, chair of Memorial's Board of Regents, welcomed the new president.

"We are delighted to have Gary, along with his wife Teresa, join our community," Mr. Simmonds said. "With his roots in rural Canada, his exemplary academic career and administrative experience at several universities, he is well prepared to continue growing Memorial. Over the next few months we'll be introducing Gary to the people of the province and the country so he can connect with Memorial University's students, employees, alumni, funders and donors to hear what they have to say."

Dr. Kachanoski will be ceremonially installed at Memorial's fall convocation on Thursday, Oct. 21, 2010.

"I am delighted to start work in this position," Dr. Kachanoski said. "I was attracted to the role by the unique history and culture of Newfoundland and Labrador, and by the special role the university plays in the life of this province. I am keenly interested and lucky to be joining Memorial at this stage in its history. The province is a place of great optimism and growth, and when I see how Memorial has been contributing to the economic, social and cultural life of this province, I feel optimistic and eager to be part of its future success."

Several issues are top of mind for the new president, including filling gaps in the university's senior leadership, and continued development of Sir Wilfred Grenfell College on the province's west coast.

"One of the first things on my agenda is to fill the posts of vice-president (academic) and the vice-president (Corner Brook)," he said. "I want to thank several individuals - Drs. Chris Loomis, Reeta Tremblay and Holly Pike - for serving so diligently and successfully in these roles temporarily during the last couple of years. It will be vital to now appoint people to these roles so that we can continue to set strategic goals and the work of further planning can begin.

"I believe that Grenfell College, the university's west coast campus, is positioned for success and I look forward to a successful search for the vice-president who will continue to forge Grenfell's path within Memorial. We also have to recruit for the role of dean of Student Affairs and Services, as Dr. Lilly Walker concludes her second term this summer with a record of strong leadership over the past 10 years. Hiring a strong leadership team is a critical first step towards shaping our direction for the next few years. That will be an important focus for me in the coming months."

Dr. Kachanoski is a world-renowned soil scientist and an experienced university administrator. He is a past-president and a Fellow of the Canadian Society of Soil Science (1999), Fellow of the Soil Society of America (1997) and editor of the Canadian Journal of Soil Science. He was inducted into the Canadian Conservation Hall of Fame in 1997, an award that recognized his dedication and commitment to soil and water conservation in Canada.

Dr. Kachanoski has more than 100 publications in refereed journals, papers and book chapters on his research in soil physics, focusing on the fate and movement of water, chemicals and gases through the soil and landscapes, and on water and soil management.

He has also served as executive director of folkwaysAlive!, a joint initiative of the University of Alberta and the Smithsonian Institute that provides leadership and support for the creation, preservation, dissemination and application of knowledge about the musical cultural heritage of communities. In 2006 he was awarded an honorary gold record at the Kennedy Centre in Washington, D.C., by the Smithsonian for his vision and leadership.

He served as founding chair (2005-07) and was the driving force behind the creation of TEC Edmonton, a joint venture with the City of Edmonton and other regional partners for advancing technology commercialization and business acceleration. In 2007 he was awarded the Enterprise Award from TEC Edmonton for his contributions to technology transfer and research commercialization in the region.

During his tenure as vice-president (research) at the University of Alberta, research revenue at U of A increased from $250 million a year to $490 million, growth that moved the institution from fifth in Canada for total research revenue to second, according to an independent ranking undertaken by Re$earch Infosource.

Dr. Kachanoski succeeds Dr. Christopher Loomis who served as Memorial's president and vice-chancellor, pro tempore, from July 1, 2009, to June 30, 2010.

Pender to head Grenfell College Secretariat

Charles Pender, educator, administrator and former municipal politician, has been appointed director of the newly established Sir Wilfred Grenfell College Secretariat.

The appointment was announced June 28 by Dr. Christopher W. Loomis, former president and vice-chancellor pro tempore, in his capacity as chair of the Task Force on a Renewed Governance Structure for Sir Wilfred Grenfell College.

The task force is mandated to undertake the important work related to academics, administration and finance, research, and communications and nomenclature that will mark a new era for Grenfell College, Memorial University's campus in Corner Brook.

The secretariat reports to the task force and has been created to augment the administrative and planning capacity at Memorial's west coast campus, including student recruitment.

"I welcome Mr. Pender to Memorial," said Dr. Loomis. "We're pleased that we've found someone of his experience and capability to help us manage through this period of change. Our goal continues to be to grow enrolment and research capacity at Grenfell and to reinforce the west coast campus's place as a vital and strong part of Memorial University."

Charles Pender is an alumnus of Memorial University with a master's degree in education. He has a deep interest in and knowledge of both Sir Wilfred Grenfell College and Corner Brook, having served as mayor of the city.

He has held many other leadership positions in the community, demonstrating the ability to carry out long-term visionary projects. He has also served as a volunteer on numerous boards and helped guide large-scale projects in the region including the Canada Winter Games and development of the Corner Brook Ports Corp. He brings to the new role familiarity with educational institutions, having served as an administrator in the secondary school system and as a student and employee in the postsecondary system.

Mr. Pender commences his new duties as director of the Grenfell College Secretariat on Aug. 9.

Dr. Loomis added that the task force is also in the process of staffing the other positions on the Secretariat in the areas of finance and administration and communications and expects the remainder of the new team will be announced soon.

Memorial dominates national award ceremony

Click for larger image

Memorial University is basking in the national spotlight after winning the most awards of any university in the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education (CCAE) Prix d'excellence awards program. The program recognizes excellence in communications, marketing, alumni relations and fundraising. The awards were presented in Victoria, B.C., at the CCAE national conference.

Memorial received 12 awards, followed by McGill University which took 10 awards and McMaster University which garnered eight. A total of 48 institutions competed, submitting 400 individual entries.

"It is with great pride that I congratulate the teams in marketing and communications whose creative work has been recognized by the CCAE," said Dr. Christopher Loomis, former president and vice-chancellor pro tempore. "Striving for excellence is a natural part of what we do at Memorial University. Ranking first out of 48 Canadian universities in the number of CCAE Prix d'excellence awards received this year is a clear demonstration of that commitment to excellence. This is an extraordinary achievement for which we are all very proud."

Memorial received four gold awards, four silver and four bronze. A gold award was captured for the Best Ad Campaign category for This is the start of something BIG, a unique advertising and promotional campaign celebrating Memorial's impressive growth in research funding over a five-year period.

Judges gave the 2009 Research Report: This is the start of something BIG a gold award in the Best Brochure category. The report was the centerpiece of the "Big" campaign, which trumpeted the news that Memorial was named number one in research growth among Canadian medical/doctoral universities from 2002-07.

Top honours were also bestowed upon Memorial for Best Program or Department Website for Literally: Graduate Student Recruitment Website. A microsite dedicated to the needs of potential graduate students, Literally is an intuitive resource enabling incoming students to fine tune their search for graduate programs. The Literally: Graduate Student Recruitment Campaign was also recognized with a silver award in the category Best Program - Student Recruitment.

And Memorial was singled out for a gold award for Best Program - Student Recruitment for the Rant Like Rick contest. The campaign challenged high school students to write and perform a rant-worthy video to nab a year's worth of tuition.

In the Best Institutional Annual Report category, Memorial University Z to A: President's Report 2009 received a silver award. The brochure is based on the theme that the university is comprised of individuals who "zag" instead of "zig," or "intellectual adventurers."

The 26 stories in the report are based on words that capture the Memorial experience, each beginning with a subsequent letter of the alphabet. Memorial University Z to A: President's Report 2009 was also recognized with a bronze medal in the category for Best Brochure.

A second silver award was awarded in the category of Best Flyer for Amazing Students. "Amazing" students are nominated by individuals who believe a student deserves recognition for their leadership skills, community involvement or university activities and demonstrates creativity in their coursework.

The university snagged another silver medal for Best Audio, Video or Multi-Media Presentation for Distance Education and Learning Technologies' Wherever Radio Campaign 2009, as well. The campaign portrayed realistic yet humorous study locations where students could possibly find themselves hitting the books - like a bench at the gym or the backseat while carpooling.

Four bronze awards were handed out to Memorial during the event. The university took home a bronze in the category of Best Student Recruitment Viewbook for its domestic and international viewbooks. The booklets catalogue the essential information prospective students need to know about life at Memorial.

Another bronze was awarded for Best Alumni Program. The Affinity Dinner Program features events across the country, offering opportunities for professional development, networking and entertainment for Memorial alumni - a number that is now 70,000 strong.

In the category of Best Poster, Memorial was awarded bronze for Let's Talk Science: "For People Who Like". The posters - which featured a fun play on words like pie/Pi and Adam/atom - were distributed to provincial schools as an outreach tool between students and Memorial's science instructors.

CCAE is the professional association of educational advancement professionals in Canada. Its members work in advancement services, alumni relations, communications and marketing, enrolment management, fundraising, government relations, public affairs and other advancement disciplines.

Perfect 40-40 vision for Memorial alumni

The Globe and Mail's 40 Under 40 celebration of Canada's new leaders this year includes two Newfoundlanders and Memorial alumni who found their success right at home.

Christine Healy and Jamie King are not just successful in their chosen fields, but they are also staunch supporters of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Ms. Healy, who works as a commercial adviser to the provincial government, is a master negotiator. She has sat across the table from some of the oil and gas industry's most powerful executives and walked away with billions of dollars in revenue for the government.

In an interview with the Globe and Mail, Ms. Healy described the energy projects and the benefits they generate for the province as "game changers."

Gaming changing is something that Jamie King, president and CEO of Verafin Inc., knows all about.

A one-time PhD candidate at Memorial looking at robotics and artificial intelligence algorithms, he found himself applying some of his research and skills to prevent money laundering and fraud.

With a couple of classmates from Memorial he founded Verafin - a software company helping financial institution detect, track and monitor fraudulent activities. The company, based in St. John's, is today among the world leaders in the field.

Doug Caldwell of Caldwell Partners International founded Top 40 Under 40 in order to draw attention to Canada's up and coming generation of leaders in the broadest possible sense of the word. Over the years, the event has recognized people working in fields as diverse as law and medicine, arts and engineering and sports and business.

New Autonomous Ocean Systems Laboratory opens

Click for larger image

By Jackey Locke
Ice-covered regions, such as the Arctic, will be vastly more accessible for research with the official opening of the new Autonomous Ocean Systems Laboratory (AOSL) at Memorial University.

"Memorial is extremely pleased to officially open this new Autonomous Ocean Systems Laboratory on its St. John's campus," said Dr. Christopher Loomis, former president and vice-chancellor pro tempore. "This research facility will advance harsh environment research and is yet another indication of how important the research at Memorial is to industry partners. This laboratory will benefit the university, our faculty and students and people nationally and internationally."

The new lab will provide a uniquely designed/equipped space to researchers, including undergraduate and graduate students, co-op students and research engineers. This new environment will help catalyze research on autonomous oceans systems; foster a culture of team work in applied research related to harsh environments, such as the Arctic; and assist the university in reaching a better understanding of ice-covered regions, which have been in otherwise inaccessible environments, through the use of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs).

The AOSL has been established through generous financial support from the Research & Development Corporation of Newfoundland and Labrador (RDC), the Canada Research Chairs program and the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI).

"This new research facility will help generate knowledge, as well as technical expertise, focused on our ocean and harsh environment," said Glenn Janes, chief executive officer of the Research & Development Corporation. "Research using underwater vehicles represents a significant opportunity for Memorial University to build expertise for the benefit of Newfoundland and Labrador."

To initiate the partnership with Memorial, RDC is investing a total of $540,755 through its Industrial Research and Innovation Fund (IRIF), the Canada Research Chairs program has committed $500,000 and the Canada Foundation for Innovation through its Leaders Opportunity Fund has committed $192,944. Their contributions have not only established the lab but will also help grow Arctic research in Newfoundland and Labrador.

"Providing researchers with the tools they need to undertake leading-edge research is what the CFI is all about," said Dr. Eliot Phillipson, president and CEO of the CFI. "The research advancements and knowledge sharing that this new lab will enable are sure to have a real and positive impact for all Canadians."

"The Autonomous Ocean Systems Laboratory is a demonstration of the partnership between Memorial and provincial and national funding agencies to establish a world-class facility for Arctic research," said Dr. John Quaicoe, dean pro tempore, Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University.

"Our government is investing in science and technology to create jobs, strengthen the economy and improve Canadians' quality of life," said federal Minister of State for Science and Technology, Gary Goodyear. "I would like to wish Dr. Bachmayer and all the researchers involved in the Autonomous Ocean Systems Laboratory success in their work. Through your hard work and dedication you are helping to realize the full potential of our natural resources, while ensuring a cleaner, safer environment."

Award of Recognition for Dr. Max House

Click for larger image

By Sharon Gray
One of the most eminent members of the Memorial University community, Dr. Max House, received the Award of Recognition from the Canadian Association for University Continuing Education (CAUCE) on June 3.

This award was established in 1987 to recognize contributions to adult and continuing education in Canada. It is not given out lightly and was last awarded to G. Raymond Chang in 2004.

Dr. House was nominated by Ann Marie Vaughan, director of Distance Education and Learning Technologies (DELT). She attended the ceremony in Fredericton, N.B, with Dr. House and played a short video compiled by DELT with tributes to Dr. House.

For 40 years, Dr. House has practiced neurology in St. John's. In addition to his clinical appointments, he has held a variety of academic and professional positions at Memorial including associate dean of Continuing Medical Education and Clinical Affairs and director of telemedicine. He was actively involved in establishing the medical school at Memorial, and played a significant role in the development of information technology in Newfoundland and Labrador and in providing health and education services to isolated communities in Canada and abroad.

In 1976 he founded the Telemedicine Centre, which would later be named TETRA (Telemedicine and Educational Technology Resource Agency) which received more than $10 million in grants over the years of its operations. This province-wide audio teleconference network contributed to many facets of health care and distance education.

Dr. House is regarded as a world leader in the areas of telemedicine and telecommunications. He has conducted many research projects and directed many international telemedicine and distance education initiatives which led him to be sought out as a keynote speaker for conferences throughout the world.

Dr. House served as the 10th lieutenant-governor of Newfoundland and Labrador from 1997-2002. In 1999, he was awarded an honorary doctor of letters from Memorial. In 2003, he received the distinction professor emeritus from Memorial. First appointed as a member of the Order of Canada in 1989, he was promoted to an officer of the Order of Canada in June 2005.
