Alumni Spotlight - Jenine Browne

Jenine was named the league’s undisputed MVP and a first-team all star

As the former Brock University Women’s basketball coach, and new coach of the Adelaide Panthers, a semi-pro Australian women’s team, Glen Shaw, was looking to pad his team with a top import. When he checked the international list for fifth-year players and those who had just graduated, Memorial alumna Jenine Browne, B.Kin.(Hons.)’05, was at the top of the list. And, having been on the receiving end of Jenine Browne’s basketball prowess -- she was outstanding as Memorial beat his Brock team 75-67 in the 2002 Canadian Inter-university Sport (CIS) championship – Shaw leapt at the opportunity to recruit her.

And oh, how right he was.

This basketball dynamo from St. Brides finished this season as the South Basketball League’s top scorer. Jenine averaged 20.4 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. And she was third in the league for three pointers. With those stats Jenine was named the league’s undisputed MVP and a first-team all star. She was also recognized for her leadership as well as her skill. Her strong work ethic in the gym inspired the team’s younger players.

But Jenine‘s time with the Panthers may be over after just one season. That’s because her coach expects her to be scooped up by one of the professional teams in Australia who will be looking to recruit her after such a phenomenal season. And of course she’s also helped raised Memorial’s status as a place to look for up and coming basketball talent.

A four time Atlantic University Sport MVP and scoring champ, Jenine made Sea-Hawk history in 2005 when she finished her five-season career with 2,028 points in 98 regular season games for a career average of 20.7 points per game. Only one other woman player in CIS history has passed the 2,000 point milestone.

So keep watching the sports headlines. We haven’t see the last of Jenine Browne.
